San Pedro de Alcántara is in an ideal situation, just 10 kilometres west from Marbella, yet just a few minutes drive away from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range and 20 km from the town of Estepona.
An ancient farming community, once famous for sugar cane, today San Pedro de Alcántara is a refreshingly unspoilt village with an appeal all of its own.
San Pedro de Alcántara came about in the 1860's on the creation of a new agricultural colony. At the same time, the areas of Cancelada and Cortes were born. Even though agriculture is still important, since the 1970's the area has thrived on tourism. Hotels, golf courses and many other businesses have become established.
An ideal place to head for is the central plaza here with its parish church and surrounding narrow streets which are packed with intriguing small shops, sidewalk cafes and bars. Thursday is street market day, a bargain shopper's paradise.
A beautiful walk is from the centre of town to the beachfront along the Avenida del Marques del Duero which is a particularly attractive wide avenue flanked by palm trees. And the modern wide promenade is ideal for continuing your stroll with several excellent chiringuitos (beachside restaurants) specialising in fish dishes.
All the beaches are sandy and kept very clean. The beach at San Pedro de Alcántara is nearly 5km long and has been awarded a blue flag.
As you enter San Pedro de Alcántara, through the entrance arch from the Cadiz direction, you meet a new San Pedro de Alcántara, kept beautifully clean with a shopping area, quiet parks and squares and beautiful gardens. Turn right off the main road for the very long, newly constructed promenade and the long, wide beaches. There is ample parking here along the sea-front. There are many new developments taking shape here.
San Pedro de Alcántara also has the last summer fair ( feria ) in Andalucia being in the second week in October.
